How much does an AI docs chatbot cost? (2026)
Biel.ai plans cost $50, $150, or $400 per month. Compare source capacity, interactions, channels, enterprise needs, and build costs.
A documentation chatbot can cost $50 per month, several hundred dollars per month, or much more when your team builds and operates the system itself.
The subscription price is only part of the budget. The plan also needs to cover your documentation volume, expected usage, delivery channels, and the implementation work your team needs.
Biel.ai self-serve plans currently cost $50, $150, or $400 per month. This guide explains what changes between those plans, when a custom deployment may make sense, and which costs to include when comparing a hosted chatbot with building your own.
Prices and plan limits in this guide are current as of August 13, 2026.
Biel.ai self-serve plans start at $50 per month
Biel.ai has three self-serve plans.
The main pricing differences are the amount of documentation you can index, the number of monthly interactions, and the product surfaces included in each plan.
| Plan | Price | Published capacity | Included access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $50/month | 500 indexed pages and 2,000 interactions/month | Web chatbot and search |
| Professional | $150/month | 3,000 indexed pages and 10,000 interactions/month | Web chatbot, search, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) access |
| Business | $400/month | 10,000 indexed pages and 25,000 interactions/month | Web chatbot, search, MCP, API access, and advanced AI models |
All self-serve plans include unlimited dashboard seats.
The 14-day trial does not require a credit card and includes one project, 500 indexed pages, and 2,000 monthly interactions.
If you approach the interaction limit, Biel.ai notifies you at 80% usage. You can then upgrade your plan or buy a one-time interaction pack from the dashboard.
Start with sources and interactions, not seats
For Biel.ai, the main self-serve pricing inputs are the amount of documentation you need to index and the number of interactions readers generate. Dashboard seats are unlimited.
Before choosing a plan, write down four inputs:
- Count the pages, repositories, files, and other sources you want to index.
- Estimate monthly interactions from reader traffic, support demand, and internal usage.
- List the surfaces where people need access, such as the embedded chatbot, search, MCP, or an API integration.
- Identify any model, security, support, or procurement requirements that may change the plan or rollout scope.
Do not treat an interaction limit as a prediction of answer quality or ticket reduction. Use a documentation-chatbot measurement method to define what you will measure after launch.
Enterprise rollout costs are custom
The $50, $150, and $400 prices apply to our self-serve plans. Larger deployments may need custom quotas, commercial terms, or implementation support.
Our current commercial scopes commonly fall between $24,000 and $60,000 per year, depending on source volume, required channels, support, security, and rollout needs.
This range is not a market benchmark, average contract value, or quote for a specific deployment. The actual price depends on the requirements of that rollout.
Custom scope may make sense when you need:
- higher source or interaction quotas
- an SLA
- a DPA
- dedicated support
- security review
- procurement coordination
- implementation help
- deployment requirements that do not fit a self-serve plan
We also offer custom quotas, SLAs, and dedicated support for teams that need more than the self-serve plans.
If you want a scoped estimate, bring your source inventory, expected interaction volume, required channels, rollout date, and security requirements. That makes it easier to separate a simple plan upgrade from a custom implementation need.
Building yourself has no fixed all-in price
A build-your-own route can start with an open-source framework or a low prototype bill, but there is no single subscription price that captures the total cost.
Your team needs to budget separately for:
- model usage
- retrieval and indexing
- hosting
- observability
- evaluation
- permissions and access controls
- incident response
- upgrades
- engineering time to maintain the system
A free framework does not make those responsibilities free.
Build when control over those parts of the system is a requirement your engineering team can own. For a deeper comparison of the operating work, see self-hosted vs SaaS docs chatbots.
What to include in your chatbot budget
The cheapest subscription is not always the cheapest deployment.
A lower-priced plan can cost more overall if it requires a platform migration, extra seats, usage overages, or engineering work outside the advertised product. A higher subscription can cost less if it removes work your team would otherwise have to build and operate.
Use this checklist for every plan or quote.
| Cost question | What to establish before buying |
|---|---|
| Sources | Which pages, repositories, files, or connected systems count toward the limit? |
| Interactions | What counts as an interaction, what happens at the limit, and can you buy more capacity without changing plans? |
| Seats | Are editors, reviewers, dashboard users, or support staff billed separately? |
| Channels | Does the required plan include the embed, search, MCP, API, or support integration you need? |
| Models | Does a different model require another plan, credit pool, or usage rate? |
| Implementation | Who connects sources, validates answers, handles migration work, and fixes failures? |
| Enterprise terms | Which security, DPA, SLA, support, and procurement requirements need custom scope? |
This checklist is also useful when deciding whether a $50 plan is enough for a pilot. If you cannot estimate the source set, expected interactions, required channels, and implementation work, you do not yet have enough information to compare total cost.
Test the plan before pricing the rollout
Use the trial with the source volume and channels you expect to deploy.
Test a few common questions, one recently changed procedure, and one question the documentation cannot answer. Record the plan, indexed source set, interaction volume, channels, and any failures that require documentation or implementation work.
That gives you a better basis for budgeting than the subscription price alone.

Frequently asked questions
Does Biel.ai charge per seat?
No.
All Biel.ai self-serve plans include unlimited dashboard seats. The main published limits are indexed pages and monthly interactions.
What happens if a team exceeds its interaction limit?
Biel.ai notifies you when you reach 80% of your interaction quota.
You can then upgrade your plan or buy a one-time interaction pack from the dashboard. Use the trial to estimate expected demand before treating a plan as a long-term fit.
When should a team ask for enterprise pricing?
Ask for a custom scope when the self-serve plans do not cover your required quotas, SLA, DPA, support, security review, procurement process, or rollout needs.
Our current commercial scopes commonly fall between $24,000 and $60,000 per year, depending on the deployment.
Bring your source inventory, expected usage, required channels, and security requirements so we can separate product capacity from implementation work.
Is building a docs chatbot cheaper than buying one?
It can have a lower initial license cost, but that does not mean it has a lower total cost.
A custom build still requires a budget for models, retrieval, hosting, evaluation, permissions, monitoring, incident response, and engineering maintenance.
Compare the operating cost of the whole route, not only the framework or subscription price.
Start with the smallest plan that fits
Start with the lowest plan that covers your source set, expected interactions, required channels, and trial requirements.
Use the trial to measure actual demand and identify implementation work before expanding the rollout.
If you want to test chat and search on an existing documentation site, start a Biel.ai trial. If you need custom quotas, security terms, or implementation help, book a demo.
